Do Cosmetic Companies Really Care About Your Health?

In December 2013, The Environmental Defense Organization has published a shocking report titled “How the Cosmetics Industry Ranks on Toxic Chemicals”. They assessed 5 big companies that manufacture cosmetics sold in Canada. You know them all – I’m sure!!!

  1. Procter & Gamble
  2. Johnson & Johnson
  3. Unilever
  4. Estée Lauder
  5. L’Oreal

The Environmental Defense Organization researched the  following most important factors that affect YOUR health and well-being:

  • Has a process of getting rid of all toxic ingredients been started yet?
Hmmm, what do you think the answer is?
  • Are the big companies addressing concerns about chemicals in products?
I’m guessing you already know the answer….
  • Are they disclosing the fragrance and perfume ingredients on product labels?
Okay so we all want to smell nice, but do we really want to use toxic fragrances?

The results of the assessment show that among the 5 cosmetics manufacturers, some are making better progress than others towards human health and environmental sustainability.  However, none of the companies have completely eliminated the MOST “Toxic-10” chemicals that were tested.

No need to memorize them all…you’ll find most of them on the ingredient list of your daily cosmetics:

  1. Triclosan
  2. Phthalates
  3. Parabens
  4. Formalde – hyde and formaldehyde releasers
  5. Siloxanes/silicone chemicals
  6. Petrolatum
  8.  BHA and BHT
  9. Coal tar derived colors
  10. Artificial musks

These toxins have been identified by several authorities as harmful to human health and to the environment. Among these authorities are:  Environment Canada, Health Canada, the World Health Organization (WHO), the State of California, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the European Union.

Now, I have a feeling that at this point you are actually wondering:

What the heck are these ingredients doing to ME?

Do they add any health benefits AT ALL?

Do I REALLY need them in my cosmetics products?

For quite some time now people like yourself, along with scientists and authorities have been concerned with the usage of toxic synthetic ingredients in cosmetics products. It is important to understand that some of these chemicals penetrate into the body through the skin. This way, they may act as endocrine disruptors and/or carcinogens (may pose cancer). In an upcoming post I will explain what this means, how it works and how it affects your health.

While some cosmetic products may contain only small amounts of toxins, the accumulative amount you absorb by using several products daily ( for many, many years), is a BIG concern.

So if you use only one product regularly you probably should be OK.

However, if you are using various beauty products like your daily moisturizer, your restorative night-cream, your colorful lipsticks, your foundation, mascara, shampoo, body wash, etc…   Your health is at a higher risk!

Exposure to toxins in cosmetics poses an unnecessary health risk and should be limited……at all times….
Let’s start NOW to eliminate toxins from products we are using!!

Unfortunately, it will take some time until all the harmful ingredients will be completely removed from the marketplace, if at all. BUT, you are responsible for your own health and well-being and by reading this article you have already taken the first step in gaining more awareness and educating yourself about harmful ingredients in cosmetics, congratulations!
